"You are the light of the world." -Matthew 5:14

Hello! I’m Matt McCarrick, and I’m here to help you grow deeper in your faith, equip you with resources for the journey, and inspire you to spread the Light of Jesus to this dark and hurting world.

Do you find yourself frustrated in your spiritual life? You have a desire to grow, but it all seems a little bit confusing or intimidating? You just wish you could find a clear path to help you grow closer to Jesus? Well, that’s exactly why I am here to help you. For over 20 years, I’ve been helping people just like you connect with the Bible in real and practical ways. The Christian life is hard. I get it! But don’t worry, I’m going to walk beside you as we journey together.

Let’s begin by looking at a few key terms you’ll come across on the Phosphorus Project…

01

Terms & Phrases

As you dive into Phosphorus Project and begin to engage with our articles, videos, and podcasts, you’ll notice a few words and phrases that keep popping up. Take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with these so you understand exactly what we mean (and what we don’t!).

Light Bearer

In Matthew 5, Jesus said that we are the light of the world. When we follow Him and reflect His Light, we are able to share the Love of Jesus with this dark and hurting world. The word, phosphorus, is a Greek word we find in the New Testament that literally means “to bring or bear light”. As followers of Jesus, we are called to be bring light, or be “light bearers” to this world.

In Acts 11, the believers in Antioch were the first to be called Christians. This is a biblical term. However, in the 2,000 years that have passed, the word “christian” has become a little blurry. Today, is can be downright confusing. Christian can mean one thing to one person and something completely different to someone else. In our culture, the word christian is broken. We are still called to be like Jesus (of course!), but the term has lost its original meaning. That’s why we primarily use the phrase “Light Bearer” in place of Christian on Phosphorus Project. It sends a specific message: We are called to reflect the Light of Jesus to this world.

Love First

We are Light Bearers. Now what? What does that actually mean? What does it look like to reflect the Light of Jesus? Answer: Love.

This isn’t any type of love. It is the Love we learn about in 1 John 1 and 1 Corinthians 13. It is selfless Love that puts others first, just as Jesus did when He gave His life for us.

Love First is a lifestyle every true Light Bearer strives to adopt. It simply means to show others Love…first. Before we speak, before we answer, before we post… we love. Before we judge, before we condemn, before we correct… we love. Our love has no filters that people must pass or check boxes they must meet. Whether they agree with us, share our faith, look like us, vote like us… or not… We are recklessly generous with our love for others.

“Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people…” -Galatians 6:10

Ordinary Christians

Ordinary [or·di·nary] adjective: “Of no special quality; commonplace; unexceptional; plain.”

No one wants to be ordinary. We don’t wake up and think, “I really want to be unexceptional today.” The same should be true in our spiritual lives. When we use the term ordinary on Phosphorus Project, it isn’t meant to put down certain Christians or shame anyone. It’s simply a reminder that our churches are filled with people who are living out a commonplace christianity. We have been called to more than just a plain life. In John 10:10, Jesus says that He has come “…that they may have life, and have it to the full.

There have been times in my own life that I’ve felt like I was living an unexceptional spiritual life. It was horrible. I never want to experience that, again, and I don’t want you to have to experience that, either. My heart breaks for christians who don’t realize that there can be more. It’s time to put ordinary in the past and step into the extraordinary adventure that Jesus is calling us to live.

The Phosphorus Project is a community of Jesus followers who are passionately pursuing what it means to spread the Light and Love of Jesus.

Core Content

As we mentioned above, our goal is to help you move from ordinary to extraordinary in your Christian life. Following Jesus isn’t easy. It can all be a little overwhelming. That’s why you need a clear path to help guide you along your spiritual journey. One way we help you create a clear path is through something we call the Phosphorus Framework. At the core of this framework is the idea that every aspect of the Christian life fits into four categories. Faith is the foundation for everything in our lives. Calling is all about discovering our purpose and utilizing the gifts, abilities, and passions that God has given to each of us. Developing a healthy and supportive Community of believers is critical to our spiritual lives. And finally, Jesus calls us to be salt and light to our Culture.

Below you will find some key articles, videos, and podcasts for these four categories:

Faith & the Bible

Calling & purpose

Community & Relationships

Culture & lifestyle

Community

The Christian life is not meant to be lived alone. We all need friends who can lift us up and encourage us along the way. That is why we created the Light Bearer Community. This is a supportive group of Jesus followers who are dedicated to spreading Light and Love in their lives. The Light Bearer Community is a closed Facebook group, and it is free to join. Don’t do life alone. Join a supportive community of fellow travelers who are learning to lean into the amazing grace of Jesus, just like you.
